A note on analytics.
This is my personal notebook. Optional analytics helps me see which pages are useful and how people find and read them.
Your choice comes first
Google Analytics 4 is off until you choose “Accept analytics.” Before that choice, this site does not load Google’s analytics script, send analytics requests or set analytics cookies. Declining does not change your access to the site.
You can use Privacy settings to accept or decline at any time. Declining after accepting stops future collection, removes this site’s accessible Google Analytics cookies and reloads the page. It does not erase data already sent to Google.
If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, analytics stays off. Analytics also stays off on local and preview versions of this site.
What is measured
After you opt in, Google receives page views, session and engagement information, browser and device information, and approximate region derived from the connection’s IP address. This site sends:
- The page address without its query string or fragment, and its page title.
- The referring site’s origin, without its path, query string or fragment.
- Article scroll milestones at 25%, 50%, 75% and 90%.
- Clicks on external web links, including the destination domain and path, without query strings or fragments.
No names, email addresses, form contents or account user IDs are added to analytics. Google Signals and advertising personalization are disabled; analytics is not used here for advertising.
Cookies and your preference
Google Analytics uses first-party cookies, such as _ga and _ga_…, to distinguish browsers and understand sessions. This site configures those cookies to expire after 180 days without extending that expiry on each visit. Browser settings may shorten their lifetime.
Your accept or decline choice is saved in this browser’s local storage and a first-party preference cookie for up to 180 days. This preference is used only to remember your choice. If storage is blocked or cleared, you may be asked again, and analytics remains off unless you accept again.
Data retention
Google Analytics is configured to retain user-level and event-level data for 14 months, without resetting the retention period when you return. This setting does not limit the retention of aggregated data in standard reports.
Google’s processing
Google processes the analytics data it receives on its systems. See Google’s Privacy Policy and how Google uses information from sites that use its services for more detail.
